Middle East
Building on lessons learned from SRF’s interactive communication programs and the Self Reliance model implemented in the United States, SRF launched an interactive call-in Arab/Hebrew radio program called Salaam Olam (Peace in the World) to promote co-existence and mutual respect. Salaam Olam aired on stations controlled by the Palestinians in Nablus, Hebron, Bethlehem and Ramallah and was simulcast on the main Arabic language station in Nazareth covering most of Israel. This program was followed by SRF’s launch of “Call Your Doctor”-a program co-hosted by an Arabic-speaking Israeli MD and a Hebrew-speaking Palestinian MD to connect callers across language and cultural barriers to medical services and support from physicians. If an Israeli listener called in the Palestinian doctor helped her, and if the caller was from the West Bank or Gaza, the Israeli doctor helped her. Proceeding under a strict ban on political discussion, the program featured Palestinian and Israeli medical professionals working together as a team to help all who called.
SRF currently provides technical assistance and encourages support for “All for Peace Radio,” a radio station with the 107.2 FM frequency, studios in Jerusalem and a tower in Ramallah. This station broadcasts programs in both Hebrew and Arabic. For more information about the radio station please visit www.allforpeace.org.
